Care & Maintenance Guide

Keep the Pool and Pool Area Clean

Leaves, bugs and debris can contaminate swimming pool water if left to decay. Today there are a variety of pool cleaners available that make pool cleaning easy and automatic. If you are planning your new pool, an in-floor cleaning system will make life even easier!

Heavily landscaped areas may hide the mechanics of pool systems, but they can cause problems. Check for leaves, grass and mulch that may be covering equipment that can cause pumps to overheat and wear out prematurely.

  Clean the Filtration System

Maximise the efficiency of your cleaning system and prolong the life of your pump and filter by routinely cleaning the pool's filtration system.

Empty and clean the pump and skimmer baskets and all filter screens. Always check the pressure gauge and backwash the swimming pool filter if higher than normal pressure is evident or if there is a decrease in water circulation.

Keep the Pool in Good Condition and the Equipment Serviced

Preventative maintenance and upkeep is the key to a long, healthy pool life. Since it is a significant investment, prevention is the best policy when it comes to swimming pools. Check the skimmer and skimmer baskets for cracks and splits. Check plumbing and valves for wear and leaking.

Maintain Water Level at the Correct Height

Ideally the swimming pool water level should be sustained about half way up the opening of the skimmer. This is the level at which the swimming pool skimmer operates most efficiently. If the water level is too high debris may pass by the skimmer opening without being pulled in. If the water level is too low the skimmer can bottom out, sucking air into the system and possibly burning out the filter pump motor.

  Keep the Water Chemistry Balanced

Balancing pool water controls stains, scale and corrosion. If pH or alkalinity levels are allowed to drift up or calcium hardness is too high, the water can appear cloudy and mineral deposits can build up on surfaces. Low calcium levels, high chlorine levels and low pH can cause corrosion, etching and pitting of pipes and equipment. Use the results of testing to balance the swimming pool. Adjust the total alkalinity first before adjusting the pH, calcium or stabiliser.

  Ideal Water Balance

Tiled, pebble and quartz rendered pools
pH 7.2 – 7.6
Alkalinity 120 - 160
Hardness 150 - 250
Stabiliser 40 - 60

  ph scale
If your pool reads in the ACIDIC areas, you will need to add pH INCREASER (sodium bi-carb). If your pool reads in the ALKALINE areas, you will need to add pH DECREASER (acid).

Keep Ducks Out of the Pool

Ducks can be a nuisance and they make a big mess in a swimming pool so it is generally recommended that you discourage them. Do not feed them. If ducks are causing significant problems there is a non-toxic formula available that works by reducing the surface tension on the water. This gives ducks a sinking feeling and they will eventually lose interest and swim elsewhere.

Safety Rules for Storage and Use of Pool Chemicals

Never mix chemicals - this could lead to an extremely violent reaction (explosion!) and/or the production of toxic fumes. Even different chlorines can react violently when mixed together. Do not use the same bucket for diluting different chemicals.

The importance of these rules cannot be overstated. Some pool chemicals are poisonous and can cause nasty burns. You should always store chemicals in a place where children cannot access them. Protective gloves, protective clothing and eye glasses may be necessary when handling chemicals.
Make sure the filter is running when you are adding chemicals to the pool water to ensure proper mixing and distribution.
Always read the instructions on the labels of pool chemicals and follow them carefully.
